Barbecued Spare Ribs

3 lbs spareribs 1 inch piece of ginger 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp mirin or sherry 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup ketchup 1 tsp salt 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. msg

Boil ribs in very little water; simmer 1 hour. Drain. Combine remaining ingredients and marinate for 30 minutes. Broil.
