This is divine on baked potatoes and broccoli. Substitute sour cream for the buttermilk to make dip for raw vegetables.  
Ranch dressing is popular because it tastes good. Ranch dressing tastes good because it is lightly seasoned buttermilk. The one thing that you need and probably don't have in your pantry is bell pepper flakes. Either dry some bell pepper in the oven (or food dehydrator if you have one) or get them from Penzey's. Their "flakes" are my "bits" so process them in a blender or coffee grinder until they are proper flakes.
